Maker’s Motif I is the beginning of the Legacy Motif series — a dimensional mural built around the story of the maker, family heritage, place, and the origins of Bootleg Silver Co.

This one-of-one work moves from Idaho to Arizona, carrying the landscapes, materials, and family history that shaped the studio.

On the left, dimensional mountain forms represent the Idaho mountains beneath a cold winter moon — a reference to the place where the maker story began.

At the center sits my grandfather’s cattle brand, the mark that became my maker’s mark and now appears throughout Bootleg Silver Co. It is the physical connection between generations and the anchor of the composition.

The central Desert Bloom element is constructed layer by layer, with dimensional floral components built in metal. Portions of the flower remain movable, allowing the piece to shift subtly rather than exist as a completely static surface.

Throughout the mural, sterling silver, brass and copper are combined with Arizona gem silica, nephrite, turquoise and other stone elements. Mountain forms are worked directly into the composition, while vintage antique beads — sourced from an antique store and given a new purpose within the piece — add another layer of history and texture.

On the right, Arizona enters the story through an ammolite sun, desert mountain ranges, and continuing Desert Bloom elements. Idaho and Arizona meet in the center — the two landscapes that helped shape the maker and ultimately Bootleg Silver Co.

Every section is built layer by layer, creating a dimensional surface that changes with light, angle, and proximity.

Maker’s Motif I is where the Heritage and Legacy language of Bootleg Silver Co. first became dimensional fine art. It represents the beginning of the series and the foundation for the commissioned Legacy Motifs that followed.
